Inspiration for this Initiative

Hi! My name is Danielle and I'm the creator of The Social Scientist. I am currently a postdoctoral fellow in the neuroscience field. The idea for this initiative started when I was at my first conference as a postdoc and struggled to make any lasting contacts.

Every career development event I have attended has emphasized the necessity to build up a network and need to spark a conversation with a stranger or cold call a possible mentor, which is not only time consuming but largely ineffective. What our fields are missing is a mentorship community; people willing to give an honest view of their career and what it took for them to get there. Our careers are shaped by a community of mentors and peers.

The goals for this initiative are:

  • To create an engaging and open atmosphere in order to expand access to STEM education

  • To strengthen and diversify the STEM fields

  • To amplify underrepresented and marginalized voices within STEM

  • To provide a global community of enthusiastic volunteers that are readily available and willing to speak on their experiences
